Who do you think is the best person to direct the sequel of Godzilla 2014?

My thoughts: I say JJ Abrams, Guilermo Del Toro, or Matt Reeves.

JJ Abrams: Because he produced a couple of great monster movies, such as Super 8, Cloverfield, and recently 10 Cloverfield Lane. He loves King Kong and says he adores Godzilla, plus has a great skill in story telling. He saved Star Wars I'm sure he could save Godzilla too.

Guilermo Del Toro: Directed Pacific Rim, loves classic Monster movies, and Since PR 2 is going through some issues and is likely to be delayed. I think Legendary should just give him the job as director, plus he wants to make a cross over of PR and Godzilla anyway.

Matt Reeves: He directed Clover field and seems to know how to make likeable characters. I loved his work on Dawn Of the Planet Of The Apes.

But please oh Please.... NO....MICHAEL.....BAY.

As Director, Producer Writer, or anything else. Keep his hands out of the project. I do not want Godzilla to end up like Transformers and Ninja Turtles. even though he didn't directed Ninja Turtles; even as a producer we learned he has a lot of power to butcher a franchise.

J.J. Abrams ruined Star Wars, if anything.

Good grief.

Steven Spielberg, Colin Trevorrow, Guillermo Del toro are my picks to direct.

I know this is all about who we wish would direct, but it's likely Legendary is going to pull from either the indie cache of unknowns or people they have a working relationship with. Here's some men Legendary currently has or recently had a working relationship with (and the movies they made FOR Legendary):

Guillermo del Toro (Pacific Rim)
Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island)
Duncan Jones (Warcraft)
Zhang Yimou (The Great Wall)

If any of those last three become a hit, I bet Legendary may offer one of them the director's chair. I wouldn't mind Jones since I loved Moon and Source Code was solid as well, but admittedly Warcraft looks like a long video game cut scene...

I WANT del Toro, and Reeves is my next choice, but I don't think we can expect much from either.

And no worries about Michael Bay--Legendary can't afford him anyway.

Hey, I TOTALLY qualified the Michael Bay idea.  If we want the "spectacle" aspect, you HAVE to have him on the list and you can't deny he's good at it.  And like it or not, the next G has to be a true visual spectacle.  For just ONE movie.  That's it.  The franchise needs that jolt.  Now let me go spit out my own vomit please. :)

Lastly, I think we should consider the possibility that Godzilla 2 actually *will not happen*.  There has been so much instability in pre-production, I'm not ready to believe it's a sure thing.  We've seen this before.  So, where is PR2 again?  Just saying.

^It's certainly a possibility, but the push back date more likely indicates WB & Legendary taking their kaiju universe seriously--As assumed by many industry insiders.

Remember, Kong: Skull Island is still part of their grand plan and they're sallying forth with that into a solid release schedule.

It's always possible the movie could be shut down, but I don't think there's any reason to hit the panic button with that kind of thought process just yet. Pacific Rim 2 is inching along with a new director and recently announced new writer; I actually think that says more for the production than Godzilla 2 right now, and the latter movie seems more like a sure-fire release.

John McTiernan needs the work. Seriously, I think Nimród Antal of the 2010 Predators might be a good fit.

Riddick's David Twohy also might be a good choice.

No force could move Spielberg to direct a Godzilla movie. He's a true auteur in the sense he picks his own projects and, lately, hasn't been interested in anything except historical dramas. I wish Spielberg would go back to the days of making fun, imaginative movies, but it seems that era has passed.

I'd be fine with Abrams. He's not my first pick, but the Godzilla series could do lightyears worse. He's derivative, (of Spielberg) but he knows how to command crowd-pleasing entertainment while making a film look good.

Agreed.  No Michael Bay.  If anything, we need Gareth Edwards back.

Like I said, I bet Legendary will go for Jordan Vogt-Roberts or Duncan Jones, especially if they're confident in Skull Island or Warcraft is successful.

Otherwise, I expect some relatively new, lesser known talent.

Everyone from every fan outlet keeps naming off huge, older names:

James Cameron
Steven Spielberg
Ridley Scott
Michael Bay
David Fincher
J.J. Abrams

etc...etc...

It's fairly unrealistic. All of those directors don't need Godzilla and are much happier choosing their own projects. Look at less big names and something closer to the wheelhouse Legendary typically guns for.

To me... nah not Spielberg or Trevorrow... Want them to be remembered as JP/JW to me.

But...

JJ Abrams

Nimrod Antal

Guilermo Del Toro

Matt Reeves

Seem like epic choices, maybe Duncan Jones Idk

I don't think names like Spielberg and Abrams is being realistic at all for SO many reasons.  Just saying.  But if I'm dreaming, I'd take Abrams in a heartbeat.

-Hogwash... What is this "instability" you are referring to? The original director left (very common) and the release date was delayed (even more common), that is it. Everything else has been going very smoothly.

And for a film that is now just below three years away, what do you expect? Pacific Rim 2 I doubt will happen: THAT is what you call development instability...

JJ Abrams sucks, he has no imagination. come on Force Awakens is one of the most terrible movies I ever saw and as well as Star Trek Into Darkness. I would explain why Star Wars Force Awakens sucked but now is not the topic.

Please get the guy who did the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Hogwash!  What is "everything else" that has gone so smoothly?  Any little news we've received has been changes?  There's no script.  If I recall, WRITERS have changed.  Have heard very little of casting outside of hints that few of the original cast would return.  And if you don't think changing dates, directors, no cast, no story is OK, I sure hope you don't work in Hollywood.  No offense.

There is a script. Borenstein was confirmed to have been working on it last year. There is no confirmation that writers have changed, though at this point it is very likely and also not uncommon. The first film had five writers: David Callaham, Drew Pierce, David Goyer, Max Borenstein and Frank Darabont. Only Callaham and Borenstein received credit.

Not hearing much in the way of casting and directors is also not uncommon for a film three years away. It's likely the next announcement Legendary will make about the film is the new director.

Again, there is no reason to hit the panic button.
