The earlier ones in the 60s bring back some fond memories.  But I don't think John Willians or Jerry Goldsmith have anything to worry about.

GMAN2887 - This was extremely neat! Thank you so much for putting it together for us! :)

@Ratdrex

On the contrary, Ifukube's material easily stands to toe-to-toe with some of their material. He was quite the master of the time. Repetitive, but with an incredible voice projected through his music.

@GMAN2887

I think the score for Godzilla 1954 was one of the most iconic scores of all times.  And I will give him credit for associating the monsters with their own theme (John Williams copied this philosophy by using music to associate the shark in Jaws and Darth Vader in Star Wars.  However, you hit it on the head when you said that his scores were repetitive.  There was not much diversity at all.  And maybe a little too much brass.

Very nice. Not sure if I have a favourite theme music since they are all so great to listen to.

Interestingly, you could also say the same about Williams in regards to repetition. And while the brass is plentyful, I think saying there's "too much" is a bit of a stretch considering what he was going for and the limited amount of resources he had to make the themes work in the 60s. His renditions in the 90s, however, were godsends for those wanting to listen to his themes in the stereo world.

I do recommend looking into his non-Godzilla scores as well for another frame of context. Setting Ifukube on anything less than the same footing as Williams and Goldsmith is rather short term thinking for such an important, cultural composer.

I will check out some of his other scores, online, and then get back to you.  But to put Ifukube next to John Williams, who has been nominated for 49 Academy Awards (2nd behind only Walt Disney), might be stretching it, a little.

@Ratedrex

Then I don't believe you've done your research since the comparison between Ifukube and Williams is just about as old as Williams' career. That or you have a misrepresentation of Ifukube's accomplishments. Many westerners have called him the "Williams of Japan" which is a bit silly since Ifukube came first-- not to mention he's been nominated and won a plethora of Japanese Academy Awards himself. (Two of those wins being Godzilla movies from the early 1990s.)

He was also awarded the Order of Culture which is a single class representation for man or woman that has made drastic contributions in Japanese art-- typically awarded by the government/emporer.

Williams is good, but no more or less impressive than the musical accomplishments that Ifukube made for Japanese cinema throughout his career.
