Elizabeth Shaw uncovers an ancient Space Jockey site that precedes the first known form of life on Earth. The site has instructions pointing to a planet within a distant star system.
Shaw works with/for the Yutani Corporation and a team is brought together (Vickers, David etc.) and sent to the distant star system aboard the Yutani Corporation vessel, the Prometheus.
Upon arriving and awakening from cyrosleep the crew head down to the planets surface and discover a vast site that resembles the one found on Earth by Shaw.
Heading inside they witness a large bipedal creature whom raises a device towards them (probably a scanner of sorts), misinterpretating this as an attack the humans shoot the large creature, decapitating him. Nearby they witness a large sculpted face, human in appearance and a plethora of urns, filled with a strange green viscous liquid.
Believing they have found the origins of life on Earth the crew take some urns back to their vessel for testing. Unaware that the site they just explored was technologically active, despite its primitive appearance, and that they were being watched.
David, an early model synthetic android (Ash, Bishop, Call) accidently comes into direct contact with the strange liquid while running tests, and he slowly, gradually becomes human.
Vickers, a Yutani representative also comes into contact with the strange liquid, and slowly gradually becomes something else, something worse.
Whatever Vickers becomes (???) the crew deal with it, although lives and presumably the strange liquid will be lost.
Believing they have all they need they prepare to leave the planet and head home, as they do the Derelict appears from within the site. Threatened the crew hasten toward the shuttle they used to land on the planet, as the shuttle launches rockets at the Derelict.
The Derelict takes the hits but continues before behaving erractically and crashing, destroying the ancient site.
Once the dust has settled the crew edge toward the Derelict, before being confronted by the classic Alien. Realising their weapons don't work they head back to the ship, pursued by the Alien. Managing to get back on board the shuttle the crew head back to the Prometheus believing they have lost all of the mysterious liquid.
Before entering Cryosleep and heading back to Earth Shaw will record the wherabouts of the ships location and brief description of the creature that pursued them, unaware that hidden in Vickers room aboard the shuttle is a near full urn of the mysterious liquid.
