What are Skullcrawlers? In the most recent theatrical trailer for Kong: Skull Island we were introduced to a variety of new, indigenous creatures native to Skull Island. One of which were focused on predominantly - the Skullcrawler. These Skullcrawlers are a serpent-like creature, measuring at varying heights and lengths and seem to be the primary enemy to King Kong and his species.

What we learned about the Skullcrawler
What we know for sure about the Skullcrawler is that they are a predatory species who reside in the bowels of the island in deep, underground tunnels. We know they walk on two front limbs and have a long tail. Their skulls also are partially exposed, however could act as a deterrent to other predators to protect their eyes and make their heads seem larger than they actually are, much like Orca Wales.

Why they are named Skullcrawlers
The reasoning behind the naming of these beasts as Skullcrawlers is passively shrugged off in the trailer, but their name could have a much more terrifying explanation.

I theorize that the name was given to these creatures because of how they attack and kill their only real threat on the island - King Kong.
In the trailer, a few shots indicate that Kong is seemingly the last of his kind to survive. Skeletons of massive Kongs litter the ground in one cutscene, also where the Skullcrawlers make their introduction.

When comparing the size of the Skullcrawler to the adjacent skulls of the fallen Kongs, it seems as if these Skullcrawlers could actually fit inside the eye socket of the Kong skull. This could mean that the Skullcrawlers actually climb or ambush the Kong species and bore their way into the eye sockets and from there into the Kong's brain cavity where they essentially kill the ape from within.
It would certainly be a horrific and terrifying way to die, but comparing the evidence we have at our disposal currently, along with the size comparison, it certainly makes sense.

Theory: The Skullcrawlers are still infants
On the flip-side, I also theorize that the Skullcrawlers could in fact be still in their infant stage. Examining an early Kong: Skull Island poster revealed a massive serpent-like creature actually buried beneath the Island - its body completely spanning the size of the island. This massive Leviathan could in fact be a mother Skullcrawler who perished before giving birth to her babies, or laid eggs beneath the Island before she passed. From there the Skullcrawler hatchlings burrowed their way to the Island's surface after hatching.
This would account for the deep, underground tunnels and the correlation between the map's image and the Skullcrawler design.

Of course the reason for their existence and their relationship with the King Kong species is purely speculation at this point. As new information surfaces, I'll be sure to update this post.
What do you think of the Skullcrawlers? Do you think the theories mentioned here could prove to be true? Let me know your thoughts in the comments section!
