Greetings Kaiju fans! Today I'm gonna review a film amongst Godzilla fans that isn't neccesarily well liked. Some say its a really lazy concept and that Toho were really out of ideas and stuff along those lines but in all honesty I really don't get the hate for this movie. Its far from perfect and has a handful of flaws but is it really that bad of a film? The SpaceGodzilla character has a stupid and unimaginative name ill admit. But the whole character looks pretty cool and isn't as stupid as it sounds. In fact his powers are quite interesting and make him a quite challenging foe for our favorite big green fella. All the monster action in the film is pretty damn good and kept me entertained but the overall story and pacing makes this film a bit of a mixed bag. But let's dive into the second to last film in the Heisei Godzilla series shall we?

The plot of this film is not very well told in a couple of aspects which does take away from the film some but its not horrible. I may be wrong about some of this but from what I understand the plot goes a little something like this.

The cells from Godzilla are brought into space by previous foe Biollante and Mothra end up exposed to very strong radiation from a black hole and caused SpaceGodzilla to be born. Very very quickly, SpaceGodzilla decides to go to earth and destroys a space station on the way there. We then go to Birth Island with members of the United Nations Godzilla Countermeasures Center (try saying that three times fast) trying to plant a mind control device on the big fella. Mothra's twin priestesses appear to the recurring Miki Saegusa to warn her about the arrival of SpaceGodzilla. After hearing the news, the JSDF decide to set up M.O.G.U.E.R.A (a mecha that was meant to replace Mechagodzilla) to intercept the incoming SpaceGodzilla but ends up getting damaged. The extraterrestrial SpaceGodzilla then lands on Birth Island and attacks Godzilla's second son Godzilla Jr. Junior ends up being put in danger and that attracts Godzilla. Godzilla actually ends up getting his ass kicked by SpaceGodzilla and Junior gets trapped in SpaceGodzilla's crystal prison.SpaceGodzilla then goes to Japan with Godzilla going after him. We then go back to the human characters with Miki getting abducted by the yakuza and is brought back to their base because of her psychic abilities to try to gain control over Godzilla. She is rescued before the arrival of SpaceGodzilla. However he lands in Fukuoka to fuck shit up unsurprisingly. The extraterrestrial then forms a very large fortress of crystals. M.O.G.U.E.R.A returns once again but is made quick work by SpaceGodzilla. Soon after that Godzilla arrives on shore and the second showdown between the two is about to happen. And again Godzilla is upstaged by SpaceGodzilla. However, we then learn from the JSDF that SpaceGodzilla is using the Fukuoka Tower as a way to convert its power. It transforms the Earth's core into an energy absorbable by SpaceGodzilla and absorbing it will slowly kill the entire planet. The two continue to fight until M.O.G.U.E.R.A which is now two different machines or Mechas whatever you wanna call it shows. One of them is known as the Star Falcon which is a flying battleship basically and the other is a large tank with a drill in the front. The two M.O.G.U.E.R.A. damage the fortress of crystals and then SpaceGodzilla's fortress ends up getting its power supply cut off when Godzilla pushes over Fukuoka Tower. M.O.G.U.E.R.A goes back to its original form and blows off some of the crystals off of SpaceGodzilla's body. SpaceGodzilla retaliates and severely damages M.O.G.U.E.R.A. The machine ends up completely destroyed when Godzilla uses a super powerful version of its signature atomic breath. Godzilla gets the mind control device removed and returns to Birth Island with his second son Godzilla Junior after he became freed from the crystal prison. We then see him blowing tiny radioactive bubbles and then the movie ends.

Overall I found the film to be not nearly as bad as its made out to be. In fact I think its well made. It suffers from a number of problems sure but its not even close to the worst Godzilla film. That distinction may have to go to Godzilla's Revenge but that's a different blog for a different time. The effects seem a bit meh on a couple of occasions but there is far more good looking effects in the film than bad ones. The story seems to have rather poor pacing at times but the story telling isn't choppy and that's a plus. There is no straight up bad actors in the film and everybody was at least decent but one issue with the movie is that some scenes that are too long should be shortened and some scenes that are too short need to be lengthened. Ill admit SpaceGodzilla isn't the most original of ideas on paper but I would be lying if I said he didn't look cool. And he was a lot more interesting of an opponent for Godzilla than it may sound. The crystals that suck energy out of the earth was a rather novel idea that really made him seem more threatening and it made Godzilla trying to save his son from the space creature quite a interesting watch.

The destruction scenes were solid and the fight scenes were enjoyable as well. Not the best the series have to offer but still very well done. The soundtrack is stellar and the backdrops throughout the movie are pretty nice at times too. This may be one of if not the weakest Heisei series movie but it still isn't that bad.
